Do I Need To Know Anything Before My First Lesson?
No. My beginner lessons are designed for people who are brand new to American Mahjong.
Do I Need My Own Mahjong Set?
No — I provide everything you need for beginner lessons, including tiles, racks, cards, and mats. If you already own a set and want to bring it, that's fine too.
Do You Teach American Mahjong?
Yes, I focus on American Mahjong.
Can I Book A Private Group?
Yes. Private group lessons are a natural fit for friends, neighbors, clubs, and families who want to learn together.
Where Are Lessons Held?
Both: in my home in Valley Center, CA, or mobile at your own location throughout North County San Diego (and greater San Diego County for mobile lessons). Note for in-home classes: there are cats and dogs in the home.
How Many People Can Join?
Group classes work best with 4 to 8 people. I can host solo, or bring a second instructor for larger groups.
What Should I Bring?
Nothing — I provide all materials, including tiles, racks, NMJL cards, and mats (and tables/chairs if needed). Beginner classes also include take-home handouts and light snacks and beverages.
What Do I Need To Buy After Taking A Class?
Do you need your own tiles, rack, card, mat, table, or dice tray right away? Short answer: not immediately — start with a card and build the rest of your set as you keep playing.
What Is "Pie" In Mahjong?
"Pie" is an informal house rule some groups use — it's not something I charge for. It's a small pot (commonly $3-$10) each player brings to a game night, used to informally track wins and losses during play. "Purse Is Empty" (P.I.E.) is the backronym players use. The National Mah Jongg League acknowledges it as a popular house rule but doesn't mandate it.
Do You Offer Private Lessons?
Private one-on-one lessons may be available by request. I keep this by-request rather than a standard listed service, since most students get everything they need from the Beginner Series plus complimentary Guided Play. Contact me for availability and pricing.
What's The Difference Between Guided Play And Private Guided Play?
Guided Play is a complimentary group session at my home in Valley Center for anyone who's taken a beginner lesson with me — free for my students, $5 drop-in for other players who already know the basics. Private Guided Play is different: it's a paid two-hour coaching visit where I come to your table to help your group build confidence before playing on your own.
